1 Black Fibre
A dark, smooth and glossy fibre obtained from the leaves of a species of the Caryota palm in Ceylon. Owing to the stiffness of the fibre it is used as a substitute for horsehair. -
2 black fibre
-
3 Black Moss
The fibre known as Spanish Moss, grown in the Southern States of America. It is used as stuffing for mattresses. -
4 Black Leaf
Terms used largely with reference to Oomras cotton in India, though for other growths as well. If cotton or kapas has been wetted by rain, or otherwise, the specks of leaf attached to the fibre turn black. Hence "black leaf" is an indication of weather-damaged cotton. In undamaged cotton the leaf is red or brown - hence red leaf. Until recently black leaf Oomras cotton was untenderable, it is now tenderable at an " off" allowance, i.e., at a discount. -
5 Jaggery Palm Fibre
An exceptionally strong fibre, brownish black in colour and having straight and smooth filaments which resemble horse hair. It is obtained from the Caryota Urens, and in Ceylon is used for making ropes for tying elephants. It is also employed for making brushes, especially those for polishing linen and cotton yarns, and for brushing velvets. Also called Kittui, or Kit-tool fibre.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Jaggery Palm Fibre

8 Horse-Hair Cloth
The original cloth was made by a Paris manufacturer in the 18th century who patented a process to make horse-hair cloth for upholstery and this was very popular for some years but is now obsolete. The stuffing cloth now used as stiffening and underlining for coats is often made of glazed cotton or hemp yarn exclusively because of the high price of the horse hair. See Palmet fibre which is used as a substitute for horse hair as well as "black fibre." -

10 Alpaca Wool
This is obtained from the domesticated alpaca, an animal resembling the angora goat, but smaller, and is variously white, reddish-brown, or black; fibre 6 to 8-in. long, with a uniform diameter, slightly wavy, smooth and fine. It is chiefly used for ladies' dress cloths and lounge jackets. Spun into counts 28's and heavier, also 2/40's and 2/36's from the finer wools. Hosiery yarns are also made from alpaca wool, mostly soft spun in natural shades. -
11 Deora Jute
A variety of Indian jute having a strong, coarse and black fibre, used for rope making. -

17 Red Leaf
Terms used largely with reference to Oomras cotton in India, though for other growths as well. If cotton or kapas has been wetted by rain, or otherwise, the specks of leaf attached to the fibre turn black. Hence "black leaf" is an indication of weather-damaged cotton. In undamaged cotton the leaf is red or brown - hence red leaf. Until recently black leaf Oomras cotton was untenderable, it is now tenderable at an " off" allowance, i.e., at a discount. -
